OBJECTIVE:
In this assignment you will learn the basic features of Windows Movie Maker - already installed on our computers.
- You will learn how to import still photos and music, apply transitions, effects, and titles to your movie. You will also use a website to obtain free music for your video. At the end of this project, you will have a 60 second movie that uses still photos to explore a theme of your choice.
Follow the instructions below, you should be able to complete this assignment without further assistance. If you find you would like to watch a video tutorial on how to do certain things, Atomic Learning has free video tutorials on How to use Movie Maker 2.
To Do: Create a Montage related by Theme - Find 18 - 24 Images that represent you
- Create a new folder in your u drive>CESPN Folder - name it Montage
- Make sure to save all images and files from this assignment in your new Montage folder
- Using Google, Bing or Yahoo advanced image search, find 18 - 24 images that are all related by a theme (Music groups, sports, eyes, flowers, cartoon characters,actors, movies, animals, city, etc - that represent who you are!!!.) The theme can also be more abstract, exploring a feeling , belief or political idea. Make sure that your subject matter is appropriate and really defines who you are. Make sure all the images are LARGE - Save the Photos in your Montage folder.
- One of the photos MUST be of you.
To Do: Create a Montage - Begin Project
- Open Windows Movie Maker (Start Menu – All Programs) If you do not find it, go to the Start Menu and select “Search.” (Select All Files and Folders) Search for “Windows Movie Maker”
- IMPORT PICTURES: Import the 18 - 24 photos into Movie Maker by going to the Movie Tasks pane and in the Capture Video section, select Import Pictures. Find the Montage folder on your “U” drive and select the photos.
- Drag the other photos into the timeline in the order you desire. You can change the order of the photos when you are in the STORYBOARD view, by clicking on them and moving them around
- Click on the Show Storyboard view to add transitions.
- IMPORT YOUR Digital Media PRODUCTION COMPANY LOGO: Import the JPEG/Gif or PNG file of your production company logo. Place the logo at the start of your movie by dragging it into the front of the timeline.
- TRANSITIONS You can find transitions under the Movie Tasks section labeled Edit Movie, click on the third one down labeled View Video Transition. You must add transitions to every photo. Use a variety of transitions. You can delete the ones you don’t like by selecting them and pressing the delete key.
- EFFECTS: Next Add Effects, which is located just above transitions. You should put Ease In or Ease Out on nearly every photo.
- OPENING TITLE: Next think up a short title that describes your theme. Click on the first photo after your logo in the timeline. Under the Edit Movie section, select Make Titles or Credits, which is directly under the transitions selection. Select Add Title on the Selected Clip. Type in the name of your movie on the first line and the subtitle on the second line. Then select Change Title Animation.
Scroll down to Titles, Two Lines and select Moving Titles Layered. You may change the fontYou should then go to Change the text font, and select a font type and color that best matches your theme. Click on, Done. Add title to movie when you are done.
- CLOSING CREDITS: Add credits to the end of movie - you should include yourself - cites from where you grabbed images from, etc..
- MUSIC: Go to www.freeplaymusic.com (or a similar free music source) and find a 60 second music selection. It must match your theme. You can Preview the music by selecting a selection in “Preview.” This will allow you to instantly hear the music. Select only 60 second MP3 files. Download these to your “U Drive” in your Digital Media folder To save a music file, do a right click and select “Save target as.”
- TRIM CLIPS: Shorten each clip so that the total length is 60 seconds. To trim each clip you must be in the Timeline view (not Storyboard view). Select the clip you want to shorten and drag the right edge toward the center.
- SAVE: You next need to save a small version of you movie and put it on the server. Go to Finish Movie and select Save to my computer.
Next write your last name and Montage (Example: Rogan_Montage) Then select the browse button and save it on your U drive. Then select show more choices in the next window. Click the radial button that says Other settings. From the pull down menu select High quality video (Small).
TURN IN ASSIGNMENT: Submit the file and email to Rogan - as lastname_montage or you can upload to our Comet TV channel directly.

Project is exactly 60 seconds long.
Project incorporates 60 seconds of music selected from Freeplay and is appropriate
Project contains 18 pictures of medium to large size that all have a common theme.
Project starts with production company logo.
Transitions are between every photo.
The “Ease in – Ease out” effect is on all most photos.
Project ends with credits listing the first initial and last name of the maker.
Project is saved at the proper quality level.
Project is placed in the proper location by the deadline.
